In 2019, my partner and I made the leap to trade bricks and mortar for a life on the water. With a background in plumbing and building, we decided a sailaway was our best option, as this allowed us to build our home from scratch. Although the plan was to complete most of the work ourselves, we were very prepared to seek help where necessary as boats are very different to houses. However, we very quickly realised that there was a real lack of reliable and available trades on the water. There was only one thing for it, we needed to carry out all the work ourselves; and so we did.
Fast forward to a (very hectic) year later (and 3 days before the first covid lockdown) when we finally finished our first boat. We were lucky enough to have our adventure followed by Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and it was from here that my journey to boat fitter really began. More people were choosing to leave the London rental scene behind for an alternative lifestyle but they needed help to do it. People started reaching out, as the classic boating look wasn't for them, and like us they felt that life on the water shouldn’t mean they had to sacrifice living in a beautiful space or enjoying heir creature comforts.
Since then, I have continued to build bespoke homes on the water and we’ve never looked back because boating is the passion we didn’t realise we had.
